For Board of Estimate & Taxation

What is the Board of estimate and taxation?

The Board of Estimate and Taxation or “B.E.T” is an independent board that sets the maximum property tax levy for city government, including general operations, the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board, and other funds that support municipal obligations like public worker pensions. In short, it’s the group of people that sets the upper limit on how much property taxes can go up. The BET also monitors changes to the city’s property tax base, and advises city borrowing.

About
ME

Hi! I’m Eric. I am a South Minneapolis resident and a progressive policy analyst with over 10 years of experience in state, local, and federal issues. I am passionate about the value of collective action and the brighter future we can build if we work together. I am running for the Board of Estimate and Taxation because I believe taxes and public investment is the essential tool for transforming society, and I want to bring that conversation to our neighbors. Here’s a little more about me:

I grew up in Brooklyn, New York and lived in five states before settling in South Minneapolis. I love many things about many parts of our country, but I have found the sense of community in Minneapolis is unparalleled, and that is why I have made my life here. I love biking all over the city, running around the lakes, cross country skiing at Theo, and working in my yard. I love to spend time with friends and my favorite day of the year is May Day. My favorite coffee shop is Canteen on Bryant and my favorite breakfast is Modern Times’ Southside Hash (Victor’s Eggs Havana is a close second).

I began my career in public policy as a researcher at the Roosevelt Institute where I had the privilege for learning from some of the greatest progressive minds in the country. That experience convinced me that, while many policy areas demand our attention, taxes and public investment are perhaps the essential through-line in our country’s contemporary struggles. Underlying so many of our challenges is a lack of investment in universal human needs like housing and health care. That is where my passion for taxes was first solidified.

Since the fall of 2020, I have been working as the Coalition Director of We Make Minnesota—a group of labor and community groups organizing for an equitable state tax code capable of funding our collective needs in health care, education, environmental stewardship, and other essential public priorities. In this capacity, I have helped fight off tax cuts for the rich, worked alongside union members fighting for their livelihoods, and stood with a wide range of Minnesotans struggling to access the basic building blocks of a healthy and dignified life.

I am running to help ensure Minneapolis has the resources we need to thrive and I would be grateful for your support.
